Temporary tattoos that are applied with water fade after a few days.  Usually, these are applied to children for fun  or adults who may want to try wearing a temporary tattoo before going for the real thing. Some can look quite real and can give a hint as to what reactions they will generate from  friends or family members.

Most contain cosmetically approved additives approved for use on the skin, but in the past, alerts have been issued for foreign made  temporary tattoos because they are not labeled with a mandated ingredient list. Also, past imports of henna products for skin use have been banned because of no mandated labels. Henna is approved for use as a hair dye and not as a skin dye for tattoos. Black and blue  henna are somewhat suspect since natural henna normally produces a reddish brown tint. These black “henna” tattoos contain p-phenylenediamine other wise known as coal tar and are unsafe for long term contact with skin, especially children.

Always make sure  any temporary tattoo given to your kids comes in a package printed with a list of ingredients. We don’t want something fun for the kids to be harmful.

As for the ingredients that go into making real tattoo pigment,  always ask the shop owner or artist giving you the tat what’s in the pigment. These days there is usually nothing to worry about, but it never hurts to be safe.

Tattoo removal has come a long way in the last 10 years, there have been some advancements and there have been more than a few steps backwards.

Pioneered by Dr. Patrick Bitter, IPL tattoo removal is becoming a popular method of tattoo removal among Dermatologists and skin care professionals. Light skinned people of European descent with dry, non-oily skin make the best candidates for ipl. Dark skinned nationalities have a higher chance of hypopigmentation of the treated area.

The treated area swells and turns a pale color immediately following treatment, but the swelling subsides quickly followed by blistering and scab formation. Skin tones return to normal after about two weeks and the treated area should be protected from the suns’ rays for six weeks following the treatment.

Removing a tattoo is serious business and Nuviderm is a serious tattoo removal product. Most people do not know the difficulty and determination required to rid themselves of deeply deposited tattoo pigment that can be made from plastic, vegetable coloring or mineral salts.

The fact that the ink settles in the skin at a depth approximately equal to the thickness of a nickel and becomes more deeply lodged as years pass makes the removal what it is, a large pain in the ass. Deep enough to be difficult, yet shallow enough to make it appear close enough to the surface so that it can be removed with relative ease and lack of discomfort. Unfortunately there is no way to remove a tattoo without a bit of determination and discomfort.

But con artists exist, as they always have, and they will say anything to make money.

Some tattoo removal products promise that simply by rubbing a cream or gel on the tattoo once or twice a day for several months you can easily fade or remove the ink as long as you pay them $75 to $100 per month for the duration of the treatment. Any such claims are, frankly, BS. If these companies could produce such results they would have medical studies backing up their claims,  and believe me you would know about them, but there are no such medical studies because these products do not do anything but enrich the companies promoting these products. Excision is a surgical approach to tattoo removal performed by a medical professional.
The process begins with receiving an injection of a local anesthetic directly into the part of the skin bearing the tattoo. Next, a scalpel is used to cut away and remove the skin bearing the tattoo.
